They have also dropped 13 points from winning positions on their own patch. Unless they keep 11 men on the field, avoid costly suspensions and start picking up points fast, they’ll go down.

They do have quality players and their 10 men fought commendably in the second half against Fulham. But, starved of service, Bobby Zamora was anonymous and Adel Taarabt had one of his infuriating days. They desperately need Djibril Cisse back from his ban. He could keep them up.

It’s not a good time to be playing Everton, either. The Toffees are on a seven-match unbeaten run. They don’t score many (just 26 goals in 25 matches) but they’ve conceded just nine in their last 13 games. QPR will have to show 100% improvement to break them down.

Once again, David Moyes has seen his side improve as the season has gone on, despite injuries and financial restraint. Tim Cahill is finally shrugging off his fitness problems. He’s completed as many 90-minute performances in the last five weeks as he did in the previous five months. Leon Osman and Jack Rodwell continued their recuperation with a reserve team game this week and Phil Jagielka is back in training.

Steven Pienaar will be available after being cup-tied for the game against Blackpool, but how much will his midweek trek to South Africa have taken out of him – and will Everton’s fortnight break ruin the solid, dependable rhythm they’d discovered?

Everton are the form side – and QPR must lift the Amityville curse to stand any chance of staying up.

A Bolton win in this one is the biggest outside bet of the weekend in the Premier League – and even just a cursory glance at their form is enough to explain why.

Only off the bottom by virtue of goal difference, Wanderers have lost their last three league games – and haven’t scored in any of their last three away from the Reebok (all lost!). Twice before they’ve suffered runs of four or more successive defeats in this desperate season, and their 20 points total is over a third down on what they’d racked up from the same number of games last year (33).

And then there’s City….

Their current sequence of five wins in a row includes three in the league without conceding, and they’ve now not dropped a single point on their own patch for over a year. Extending the run to 19 successive home league wins would equal Manchester United’s Premier League record set in October, and keep them on course to be 100% at home over an entire season. That hasn’t been done for 120 years – when Sunderland won 13 out of 13 home games in becoming champions in 1892.

Owen Coyle insists that his team will go to the Etihad and “try to be positive”, and that’s surely the only way for Bolton to be. Relegation rivals Blackburn sat back and surrendered 69% possession last week and still got hit for three.

The game between the sides in August oozed positivity all round, with City following on from their opening-game win over Swansea with another swashbuckling display to win 3-2. Roberto Mancini’s new attacking philosophy was evident throughout, as was a fighting spirit from Bolton that they’ll need to find again over the coming weeks.

If they find it to take anything from this game, it might just rank as an even bigger upset than Blackburn’s win at Old Trafford on New Year’s Eve.

It’s hard to work out who’s feeling more miserable ahead of this weekend’s game, Blackburn fans or Villa supporters? Some of the Rovers faithful are planning another demonstration ahead of the game as they try to illustrate a vote of no confidence in the owners, Venky’s. Fans have also launched a new share investment scheme in a bid to buy the club.

There is also growing vocal dissent from Villa supporters at the way the team is playing under manager Alex McLeish. The announcement of record losses of £54m and a season-ending injury to top striker Darren Bent have completed a miserable week for the 15th-placed club.

Blackburn have lost three of their last four games and were totally outplayed at Manchester City last week in losing 3-0, but they know a win here would almost certainly lift themselves out of the relegation zone while bringing Villa that little bit closer to the bunfight at the bottom.

Rovers are the only team in the top four divisions in England not to have kept a clean sheet this season and have conceded more goals (59) than anyone else in the Premier League, but Villa’s attacking record might give them hope. I was surprised to learn that with Darren Bent out of the picture it is four months since any of Villa’s available strikers have scored in the league.

March looks like being a really important month for both of these teams when you look at their relative positions and the fixtures coming up. Following this home match against Aston Villa, Blackburn play away at fellow strugglers Wolves and Bolton.

Meanwhile, Villa need a couple of good results quickly to calm fears of being dragged into the relegation dogfight. The trip to Ewood is followed by back to back home games against Fulham and QPR – three key games when you realise they have a tough run immediately after that against Arsenal (a), Chelsea (h), Liverpool (a), Stoke (h) and Manchester United (a).

Blackburn against Villa might not be one of the prettiest games of the season, but it should be one of the most competitive and keenly contested.

“Their team has been fairly consistent and they haven’t had too many major injuries, unlike ourselves, and I think the results Celtic have achieved has come from consistency of selection.

“They will not take the foot of the pedal, that is certain, I don’t think Neil Lennon would allow that.

“Neil Lennon is an outstanding operator and you underestimate him at your peril. You cannot fault the run he has Celtic on right now.

“We have got to try and win our home games. I think if we won three of them and didn’t lose the others we would be in contention [for the top six] – I’m not saying we’d make it. Celtic is one of the home games.

“We never go out to defend the game and we never go out looking for the draw. We play appropriately but I don’t think any team I have sent out has been sent out with a defensive mentality.”

Celtic manager Neil Lennon : “With the international boys being away, the amount of travelling they have done and the fact that it’s a 12 o’clock kick-off in Aberdeen, which I am really not happy about, there will be a few changes from last week.

“The majority of them are back but I haven’t see Efrain Juarez or Emilio, they are still making their way back and will be very doubtful.

“Ki Sung-yueng is still making his way back or else he might still be in South Korea.

“There is no point in rushing him back because he probably wouldn’t have made it back in time anyway.

“I am all for internationals and all for friendlies.

“My beef is with the scheduling of this game.

“If it had been three o’clock or on Sunday, it might have bought us a bit more time to get the players back and have ample time for them to recover.”

It was quite a weekend for the red and whites of north London and Liverpool. If ever they should go into a game feeling confident then now’s the time.

Liverpool will be eyeing a domestic cup double and hoping to stitch together a proper run of results in the Premier League between their remaining cup commitments. Their Premier League campaign so far has been a bit of a disappointment. Everyone knows that home draws have been their big problem, but it’s gone slightly under the radar that they have won only one Premier League game in 2012.

They are the outsiders in the race to be fourth, but if Liverpool can win this game they will reduce the arrears on Arsenal to four points with a game in hand. Chelsea are so unpredictable that anything could happen to them, and no-one should write off Newcastle.

The Reds’ run-in does not look that fearsome and an outbreak of consistency could yet see them sneak back into the Champions League.

So what of the conundrum that is Arsenal FC? As an individual, Theo Walcott almost sums up the Gunners as a whole. Looks great, says all the right things in an intelligent way, but constantly leaves you wanting more. Then, just when you have decided that he’ll never produce – bang! As Spurs found out, Walcott and Arsenal still command respect.

Defensively they are sometimes shockingly bad, but going forward they can still make the opposition look like leaden-footed lumbering dinosaurs.
