Wednesday night was an extraordinary evening. Having commentated on Manchester United at Wigan and done the post-match interviews at the DW stadium with a jubilant Roberto Martinez and a frustrated Sir Alex Ferguson, I dashed away to get in front of a TV for Match of the Day just in time to catch the highlights of Manchester City dispatching West Brom.

    “I am certain Villa will stay up, but they will not feel safe until they have notched another win”

The contrast was startling. It was like the autumn all over again, when City were scoring goals just to keep themselves from getting bored whilst in comparison United looked flawed and vulnerable.

Surely if anyone can hold their nerve as their last five games are played out it is United? They must still be strong favourites but their big players were all below par at Wigan and they thoroughly deserved to lose. They can allow themselves one more mishap and still win the league - but not two.

So what odds on another pivotal game between United and Aston Villa? Anyone who was there is unlikely to forget the Old Trafford meeting of April 2009 when United were wobbling under intense pressure from Liverpool in the title race, only for Federico Macheda to pop up with a last-minute winner in a 3-2 victory. It inspired Ferguson's side to remain unbeaten for the rest of the run-in and take the title.

That was just one of many United wins over Aston Villa in recent years. In fact Villa's 1-0 success the following season is their only win home or away against United in 30 attempts going back to 1999. Their record is actually every bit as dismal against United as Wigan's was until Wednesday.

I am certain Villa will stay up, but they will not feel safe until they have notched another win. There is no disguising that this has been another poor campaign for a club which is rightly proud of its place in English and European football history. Villa's lowest Premier League points total is 42, they are seven short of that now with six games to play - beating it might be a struggle.

Celtic captain Scott Brown requires a fitness test, but manager Neil Lennon expects the midfielder to face Hearts in their Scottish Cup semi-final.

Victor Wanyama is now free from suspension and Thomas Rogne is available again following injury, but James Forrest has a long-term problem.

Jamie Hamill misses out for Hearts, but winger David Templeton is available for the first time since February.

Andy Webster should be fit, but four other players are injury doubts.

Strikers Craig Beattie and Stephen Elliott and midfielders Mehdi Taouil and Adrian Mrowiec are all struggling to make the game against the newly crowned Scottish champions at Hampden.

Hearts have nine players walking a suspension tightrope, although manager Paulo Sergio has urged them to focus only on Sunday's game and not on the possibility of missing out on the final should the Edinburgh side get there.

Captain Marius Zaliukas, Rudi Skacel, Andrew Driver, Darren Barr, Danny Grainger, Scott Robinson, David Templeton, Suso and Jordan Morton are all in danger of being suspended for the final should they pick up a second yellow card of the competition.

Hearts go into the game on the back of two straight wins as they chase European qualification spots in the Scottish Premier League.

They have lost only one of their last seven games, with the 2-0 quarter-final replay win over St Mirren in Paisley being one of five victories after a 2-2 draw.

The Edinburgh side will take confidence from their 2-0 win over Celtic in October, but that came before Lennon's side went on a long unbeaten run that allowed them to overtake reigning champions Rangers and clinch the title last weekend.

It is the first Scottish Cup meeting between the sides since 10 April 2005, when Celtic won 2-1 to reach the final, where they defeated Dundee United, after recording their 17th win in 23 meetings between the clubs in the country's premier knock-out competition.

Celtic have bounced back with two victories following their surprise defeat by Kilmarnock in the Scottish Communities League Cup final and losing to Rangers in the Old Firm derby.

They arrive at Hampden on a high after securing the league title in style by hammering Kilmarnock 6-0 at Rugby Park.

The winners will face Hibernian, who defeated Aberdeen 2-1 on Saturday, in the final, which for Hearts means the prospect of a first Edinburgh derby in the Scottish Cup final since 1896.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon : "It's been a great week. The place is vibrant.

"The players are ecstatic and I don't think it will take too much to get them back up for the game on Sunday.

"It will be a difficult game - semi-finals always are - Hearts are formidable opponents and, having watched them in the last round beating St Mirren way, they've got good pace in the team.

"Skacel's a threat, Beattie's a threat, so they've got goalscorers in the team as well so we're going to have to play well."

Although the six televised fights feature mid-card talent, the main event does feature a promising light heavyweight contender, Alexander Gustafsson, who may be a few fights away from a showdown with Jon Jones in late 2012.News has emerged that returning UFC fighter Thiago Silva will fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC on Fuel TV 2 as a replacement for an injured Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. This new main event will be part of a show that is set to take place on April 14th 2012 in Stockholm, Sweden at the Ericsson Globe Arena. Nogueira had to withdraw from the fight due to a knee injury.
Thiago Silva will enter this fight with an MMA record of 14-2, his last fight in the UFC was against Brandon Vera at UFC 125. Silva did emerge victorious in this fight but the decision was later overturned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission due to Thiago submitting a urine sample that was not actually human urine in two separate drug tests. Thiago later revealed that he had actually taken a prescription steroid in relation to a back injury he had sustained in the lead up to the Brandon Vera fight and knowingly broke the rules. Thiago was given a 1 year suspension due to this incident which he has now served. It will be interesting to see how he performs in his return to the octagon and I know many fans will be tuned in to watch fight.
Alexander Gustafsson will enter this bout with an impressive MMA record of 13-1 with his only ever career loss suffered at the hands of Phil Davis at UFC 112. Alexander was last seen in action at UFC 141 against Vladimir Matyushenko in a fight which he won via TKO in the first round. This gives Gustafsson a four fight win streak which he will look to take to five against Silva. A victory will put Alexander very high up the ladder, so he is sure to be very focused on the night especially fighting in front of his home crowd. I can’t wait to see these guys go at it!A middleweight tilt pitting Brian Stann vs. Alessio Sakara draws co-main event honors at Saturday's UFC on Fuel TV 2 event from Stockhom, Sweden. The bout will complement a salivating headliner between Alexander Gustafsson and Thiago Silva, and the main card festivities begin at 3 p.m. ET following the Facebook stream of the preliminary card at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Brian "All American" Stann (11-4) is a decorated Marine and the former WEC light-heavyweight champion. Stann was unseated by Steve Cantwell at WEC 35 by TKO, which was the first loss of his career. His Octagon stint started on the wrong end of a Krzysztof Soszynski kimura, but Stann rebounded by avenging his loss to Cantwell in the rematch and defeating Rodney Wallace, both by unanimous decision.

Three home wins in a row have got QPR fans thinking their side might actually survive the first season back in the Premier League and why not?

It does look as though Mark Hughes and his management team are getting results from the players just at the right time and this game at The Hawthorns could be key.

Three of Rangers' last five games of the season are on the road and you'd think they'll need to get something from at least one of them. With visits to Manchester City and Chelsea to come, you can see why leaving West Brom empty-handed might not be such a good idea.

    “QPR haven't won away for five months now, since a 3-2 victory at Stoke on the 19 November, and have taken just two points from their last 10 matches on the road. ”

The home wins over Liverpool (who'd have thought that 15 minutes from time? Not me up in the commentary box, that's for sure), Arsenal and Swansea have given genuine reason for optimism in west London.

But if the anaemic away form continues it places massive pressure on the home games with Spurs and Stoke City. QPR haven't won away for five months now, since a 3-2 victory at Stoke on the 19 November, and they've taken just two points from their last 10 matches on the road.

By contrast, West Bromwich Albion have actually been slightly better away than at home this season, claiming five points more on their travels than at The Hawthorns.

They've hit a bump in the road lately though with just one win from the last six games, losing four in that run, including 4-0 at Manchester City on Wednesday night.

But Albion's recent home record isn't bad, with three wins from the last four, including a 3-0 victory over relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers last weekend, and Rangers will be desperate to avoid a similar fate in what they'll see as a potentially winnable game. Defeat in this one could end up costing them dear.

Three weeks ago, Blackburn Rovers were five points clear of the relegation zone and I was one of many who thought that they had the form, confidence and remaining fixtures to see them safely stay up. Four defeats in a row later - their worst run of the entire season - and they're well and truly back in the mire, with only Wolves below them.

The next two games must now be seen as crucial for Steve Kean's side, with a minimum of four points needed from this trip to South Wales and the home game against Norwich next weekend. That's my theory anyway - based on Rovers' final two away games being at Spurs and Chelsea, with a potentially decisive clash at home to Wigan in between.

Losing after coming back against Liverpool's 10 men on Tuesday will have hit particularly hard.

Kean has called for "a little more aggressive" defending of set-pieces, and I presume he's meant more concentration in that too. No team has conceded more goals in the final 10 minutes of Premier League games this season than Blackburn's 17 - with four in the last three games alone.

Scoring at anytime has become a problem for Swansea in recent weeks, firing blanks in three of their last four matches. After delighting with their football and making themselves 'safe' with results, the Welsh club's first top-flight campaign since 1983 seems to be finally catching up with them.

Like Blackburn, they've lost four on the spin coming into this game, with Brendan Rodgers moved to apologise to supporters for the defeat at QPR in midweek - easily their weakest display of the season. He has of course got nothing to say sorry for, but he won't rest until relegation is impossible.

Wolves already can't catch The Swans - beating Blackburn would mean they can't either. One step at a time for a club that's made giant strides this season.

Personal pride is top of the agenda for both sets of players for this match. Manager Terry Connor has urged his players to fight to the finish as Wolves look to avoid going down with a whimper, while after a fairytale start at Sunderland Martin O'Neill has seen his team pick up just nine points from the last nine games.

I watched them cave in and suffer a 4-0 defeat at Everton on Monday when they looked a shadow of O'Neill's spirited side that recorded 23 points from the first 30 when he took over.

He admitted afterwards they were well beaten and assured the Sunderland supporters he would not allow his players to take their foot off the pedal between now and the end of the season. Whatever happens, when O'Neill watched from the stands as Wolves beat Sunderland at Molineux in December - a result that left them just one point above the relegation zone and three behind Wolves - few would have predicted their scenario now.

It has been a contrasting tale since that night for Wolves though. They have won only one match since and there have not been enough signs of the dogged determination they showed 12 months ago to survive.

After witnessing the Black Country derby defeat to West Brom I remember thinking it would be a strange time to make a managerial change and that Mick McCarthy was still the best man available to try and keep them up. One point from the last 24 since hasn't changed my opinion.

Defensively they have too often given themselves a mountain to climb. Thirty matches without a clean sheet and 73 goals conceded, which is seven more already than the entire campaign last season, are statistics that will see them head in only one direction.

Wolves fans don't need reminding how difficult it was to get back into the top flight; if these are to be their last five Premier League matches they will want to do themselves justice in them.

It's hard to know which of these two troubled sides have a greater need for victory. Logically of course Blackburn's plight means their very survival hangs on every precious point, but Liverpool's own subplot of recent baffling underachievement means they too can't simply view this game as a pre-Wembley warm-up.

Three weeks ago Tuesday's hosts had seemingly given themselves some breathing space as a three-match unbeaten run helped elevate them six points above the drop zone. Three straight defeats later and they've been dragged back into it again.

    “Liverpool would certainly be forgiven for prioritising their Wembley meeting with Everton over a Tuesday night duel at Blackburn. ”

With time running out Rovers have to view a game against a seemingly out of form opposition as an opportunity not to be passed up. After all they've secured more points, scored more goals and won more league matches than the Reds in 2012.

A quick look at their remaining fixtures highlights the significance of the meeting. Their final three away games take them to Swansea, Tottenham and Chelsea, while a visit from a tension-free Norwich and a nerve --jangler against Wigan complete their Ewood Park schedule.

Rovers' recent home form also offers encouragement, with 10 points accumulated from their last six played there, while Liverpool arrive off the back of four away defeats in a row and with that Merseyside FA Cup semi-final showdown looming large.
