When Bolton lost at home to Norwich back in September it was the day the alarm bells began to ring for their fans. Having started the season with a 4-0 romp at QPR, Wanderers subsequently lost the next four games in a row but while the reverses against Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United were unwelcome, the one at home to the Canaries caused the most concern.

The newly-promoted visitors had begun the new season tentatively and had been winless in four matches prior to their trip to the Reebok. However, two first-half goals set them on their way, a red card for Wanderers' Ivan Klasnic also helped, and even the concession of a fifth penalty in as many games couldn't deny them their opening victory.

The significance of that win should not be underestimated - it almost immediately added self belief to their undoubted ability. It sparked a run in which they gathered 11 points from six games to propel them into mid-table security, where they've confidently and deservedly remained. But Norwich's midweek humbling at Sunderland will serve as a timely reminder that their safety isn't yet guaranteed.

In contrast, Bolton have rarely been out of relegation trouble. Indeed, on 17 December they had begun to look marooned at the bottom following a five-game losing streak.

In manager Owen Coyle they have a confident and measured leader and their recent form of just two defeats in seven has started to reaffirm his belief that Wanderers have what is required to extend their Premier League tenure to a 12th successive season. A win at Carrow Road would certainly enhance those prospects still further.
