The claret and blues have lost six of their last eight matches at Villa Park this season while the Toffees have failed win on the road since the back end of November when they overcame Bolton.

Villa have been boosted by the news that striker Robbie Keane is in contention to make his debut - subject to obtaining international clearance.

The Los Angeles Galaxy player had been training with Tottenham before agreeing to join Villa on a two-month loan deal which is sure to appease the majority of fans at the club who have been left frustrated by the lack of transfer activity.

Keane's previous taste of the top flight was an injury-hit spell on loan at West Ham last season before he left Tottenham for Galaxy in the summer.

But the 31-year-old is now fully fit and believes he is a wiser player than the one who came close to moving from Wolves to Villa 13 years ago.

Keane said: "It (damaging my reputation) is not something I've thought about. What impact can one player make in six games or so?

"Hopefully it will be a good one. I hope it works out well for both parties. I don't think I'm running a risk, no."

The striker is looking forward to aiding Villa through what manager Alex McLeish has described as a transitional season.

Everton, meanwhile, have signed Manchester United's Darron Gibson. The 24-year-old Republic of Ireland midfielder put pen-to-paper on four-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee and will be a welcome addition to the Goodison Park squad with a long list of players already on the treatment table.

Defeat to Bolton a week ago ended a four-match unbeaten run in the league and that was quickly followed by a midweek loss at high-flying Tottenham.

Phil Neville admitted Everton's defensive crisis is getting beyond a joke although he is not volunteering to fill the breach at Villa Park and manager David Moyes concedes he has run out of options.
