The Brazilian defender, 29, has been told he has no future at Chelsea after handing in a transfer request.

“I’m sure that the clubs can reach an agreement if they continue to push,” Villas-Boas said.

“We know Alex’s market value and we’re just not going to let him go quite easily, not that QPR’s offer is far, far off.

“He is a player who has attracted a lot of interest from Premier League clubs and from abroad.”

Even if a fee is agreed, convincing Alex to join QPR may not be a formality amid reports he no longer wants to remain in England.

Alex, who has also been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus, was signed by Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2004 but had to be loaned back to the Dutch side because of work-permit issues and only moved to England in 2007.

Meanwhile, the Blues are closing in on a deal to replace Alex with Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill.
