Preview

Manchester United will be looking to get their Premier League title challenge back on track when they host Bolton on Saturday.

The defending champions spurned the chance to come into 2012 as league leaders when they suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat by Blackburn on New Year's Eve.

Newcastle then showed no mercy on Tyneside four days later, with the Magpies punishing a poor United performance by beating them 3-0.

The signs were ominous heading into last Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie against derby rivals Man City, three points above them at the top of the table.

Although a third straight defeat wouldn't have affected the league table, it would have had a damaging psychological effect while giving City a major boost.

But Sir Alex Ferguson got the response he wanted. Wayne Rooney headed United into an early lead and although they were left hanging on after City spent most of the game with 10 men, the Reds made sure they stopped the rot.

After two straight defeats in the league and with Tottenham having drawn level in second place, Ferguson will be demanding another victory on Saturday, particularly as United have won seven of their last eight meetings with Bolton.

Despite draws at home to Wolves and away to League Two Macclesfield in the FA Cup last week, Bolton are actually on their best run of form this season.

Those results sandwiched a much-needed 2-1 win at Everton, meaning they head to Old Trafford on a three-game unbeaten run.

That may not sound much but that is a measure of how disappointing Bolton's results have been so far. Previously they hadn't even managed to go two games unbeaten all season.

The Trotters lost 5-0 at home to United in September and go into Saturday's game third-bottom, one point from safety.
Team news

Paul Scholes could make his 467th Premier League appearance after the 37-year-old came out of retirement to feature in last week's 3-2 win at City.

Fellow midfielder Darron Gibson completed his move to Everton on Friday while defender Nemanja Vidic remains a long-term absentee.

Coyle will revert to his strongest line-up after fielding a weakened team at Macclesfield and the Bolton boss is ready to play Gary Cahill if his proposed move to Chelsea does not go through.

But if the Blues seal their move for the England defender before the weekend, Zat Knight is likely to partner David Wheater in central defence.

Coyle will make a late check on goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who is nearing full fitness after a thigh strain, with Adam Bogdan having deputised in goal.

Possible starting XIs

Bolton: Bogdan, Steinsson, Knight, Cahill, Ricketts, M Davies, Reo-Coker, Muamba, Petrov, Eagles, Ngog.
