Preview

Having tasted derby heartache in midweek, Wolves will be hoping to steer well clear of those emotions when they play host to local rivals Aston Villa.

An FA Cup third round exit at the hands of Birmingham had Mick McCarthy fuming on Wednesday, and he has demanded an improvement from his troops on Saturday.

It is imperative that Wolves find an extra gear from somewhere, as they remain precariously perched just above the Premier League drop zone.

A seven-match winless run has them sat just a point above the basement dwellers and facing up to the prospect of ending the weekend inside the bottom three.

A run of nine games without a clean sheet has hardly helped their cause, and McCarthy will know that he needs to start plugging the defensive holes.

On a positive note, Wolves have recouped more points from losing positions this season (10) than any other side in the division, and in Steven Fletcher they boast an in-form striker who has grabbed seven goals in his last nine starts.

They will, however, need no reminding that only one of their previous seven Premier League meetings with Villa has ended in a home win - and that was the very first one.

Villa will arrive at Molineux hoping for more away day joy, and their recent record on the road makes for positive reading.

Alex McLeish's side are unbeaten in their last four games away from Villa Park, picking up eight points in the process.

They have, however, won only one of their last six top flight fixtures at any venue and are now just seven points clear of the relegation zone.
Team news

Wolves skipper Roger Johnson is set to be fit for derby duty after missing the FA Cup replay against former club Birmingham with an ankle injury.

Full-back Kevin Foley (ankle) and winger Matt Jarvis (hamstring) are also expected to be available after being ruled out of the shock cup exit.

Top scorer Fletcher will return along with the other nine players not included for the replay as Wolves look to build on last weekend's impressive 1-1 draw at Tottenham.

Striker Robbie Keane is in contention to make his full Aston Villa debut against his former employers.

The on-loan Los Angeles Galaxy player only appeared as a late substitute against Everton but has impressed McLeish in linking up with playmaker Stephen Ireland in training this week.

Midfielder Chris Herd (ankle) and veteran striker Emile Heskey (Achilles) are still ruled out as Villa look to protect a 33-year unbeaten record at Molineux.

Possible starting XIs

Wolves: Hennessey, Foley, Berra, Johnson, Ward, Kightly, Henry, Frimpong, Edwards, Jarvis, Fletcher.

Aston Villa: Given, Hutton, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Albrighton, Petrov, Ireland, Clark, Bent, Keane.
