Preview

Maccabi Haifa’s nightmare season continues as last year’s champions are now 10th in the table with an unimpressive 7-7-7 record. they’ve recorded only one win in their last 10 games (scoring in average less than one goal), including two abysmal performances in the UEFA Europa League vs Laranca and Schalke 04. While relatively resilient at home, where they’re 4-4-2, Haifa are coping with something of an all scale fan protest as they’re completely fed up with manager Elisha Levi’s recent results. It should be noted however that the club recorded back-to-back 0-0 draws in previous fixtures.

Haifa’s recent goal drought is aggrevated by two key factors: First, top goalscorer Wiam Amasha (13 goals) is out with a groin injury. Secondly, fellow striker Vladimir Dvalishvili (7 goals) has been sold to Polonia Warsaw, leaving the Haifa side very weak up front with the aging Yaniv Katan (1 goal) as the only real “classic” striker in the team (the others, namely Mohammad Ghadir, Eyal Golasa, etc. are attacking midfielders which are required to play out of position and therefore fail to deliver the goods).

Probable lineup:
Davidovic – Dgani, Buljat, Cucalic, Tawatha – Seydo, Boccoli, Golassa, Katan – Gadir, Azriel
Maccabi Tel Aviv

Maccabi Tel Aviv is 5th (10-3-8 overall, 4-1-5 away) with 33 points, still maintaining faint hopes of securing a European ticket at the end of the season. The club was in a deep crisis which culminated after suffering 6 consecutive defeats in November. Former coach Motti Ivanir was sacked on early December and replaced by Nir Levin, and since he took over the club is playing attractive football and presenting an improved record of 4-2-2, including an impressive away draw against Dynamo Kiev. Overall, Maccabi scored no less than 16 goals in 8 games since Levin became boss.

Levin finally has a full squad to choose from. He is expected to start with the same 11 players who demolished Hapoel Beer-Sheva 4-0 last time out. The formation is an extremely offenive, a variation of the nearly out-dated 4-2-4, featuring Eliran Atar, Barak Yitzhaki, Roberto Colooti and Munas Dabour. These four players share 23 goals between them so far.
