Preview

Arsenal are the Premier League's form team and they have already beaten Saturday's opponents Aston Villa twice this season. They must be odds-on to complete the hat-trick and make it seven successive league wins for the first time since autumn 2007.

“Villa earned a draw in the first competitive game at the Emirates but they have a poor recent record against Arsenal”

It might not be straightforward, however. Villa gave a spirited display in the reverse fixture before Christmas, only to succumb to Yossi Benayoun's late winner, and were then 2-0 up at the Emirates in the FA Cup fourth round before being on the receiving end of one of those Arsenal comebacks that are fast becoming legendary.

While Villa have since been weakened by long-term injuries to Richard Dunne and leading scorer Darren Bent, Arsenal have benefited enormously from the return to fitness of their specialist full-backs. Arsene Wenger believes their absence had much to do with his side's mid-season slump, and it is worth noting that the current back four of Sagna, Vermaelen, Koscielny and Gibbs have never been on the losing side as a unit in the Premier League.

Of course, it helps when you have Robin van Persie at the other end of the pitch. He has scored 44 goals in his last 46 Premier League appearances, and netted three penalties against Villa this season.

Theo Walcott has also come into form, possibly spurred on by the emergence of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It's interesting how Wenger has used Oxlade-Chamberlain - reserving him mainly for home games and then only playing him for an hour or so. I think they could be competing for just one spot in the England squad for Euro 2012.

With Tottenham playing at lunchtime, Arsenal could be back in fourth when they kick off. Wenger has led Arsenal to a top-four finish for 14 seasons running. Extending that record to 15 and securing Champions League football is vital if they are to retain van Persie and bring in players of the calibre of reported target Lukas Podolski.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Aston Villa won at Arsenal last season for only the second time in the last 25 attempts; Darren Bent scored two early goals in a 2-1 victory on the penultimate weekend of the season.
Arsenal have lost only two of their last 26 league meetings with Aston Villa (W16, D8, L2).

Arsenal

The Gunners have won their last six Premier League matches, scoring 19 goals in the process. They have not won seven successive league games since August-October 2007. Their current run included four successive victories after falling behind.
They are in third place after a complete round of fixtures for the first time this season.
Arsenal have gained an unrivalled 19 points from losing positions, including six wins.
Robin van Persie made his 25th league start of the season on Wednesday night; it's his career-high tally for a single campaign. According to Infostrada, the Dutchman has scored or assisted in 36 league goals this season, 11 more than second-placed Wayne Rooney.

Aston Villa

Villa have earned just 10 points from the last available 27 (W2, D4, L3), but they have only lost one of their last eight away games.
Alex McLeish's side have only won one of their 14 previous matches against top-half opposition - away to Chelsea on New Year's Eve.
They are the only team not to have scored from a corner in the Premier League this season.
Andreas Weimann's stoppage-time winner against Fulham in Villa's last game was the first goal for four months to be scored by one of the club's currently available forwards. Gabby Agbonlahor has gone 13 matches without a top-flight goal.
