Preview

Anderson could return for Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson plans to field a strong side for the visit of Athletic Bilbao in the Europa League.

The Brazilian has recovered from a knee injury suffered on 8 January.

Chris Smalling (head) and Tom Cleverley (ankle) are also in the frame but Paul Scholes is expected to miss out.

"Some of our European form this season has been disappointing. But we need to take this opportunity to progress," said Ferguson.

Did you know?

Athletic Bilbao have never won in eight attempts against English opposition. They have lost six of those games

"I don't know if we've struggled because we've been making too many changes in these games," added Ferguson. "But we made mistakes in the group stages of the Champions League, so it's our own fault.

"It's disappointing but on Thursday we'll field a strong team and hopefully that will make a difference. It's a game in which we need to wake up, there's no question about that."

Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta is suspended for the last-16 tie, the Spanish side's first game against United since 1957.

But forwards Iker Muniain and Fernando Llorente, who has scored 12 goals in 18 games since returning from injury in January, are available.
