The journey from Elland Road to the Riverside is just 72 miles by road, meaning Leeds are the nearest Championship club to Middlesbrough, geographically. However, contrasting recent fortunes mean Boro, who have won four of their last five, go into this match nine points clear of the Whites.

New Leeds boss Neil Warnock is still waiting for his first win since officially taking charge, but he can take heart from Leeds' remarkable record away to Boro - they have never lost at the Riverside, and are unbeaten in their previous nine trips to Teesside. In fact, the last time Leeds lost on Boro turf was a 4-1 defeat at Ayresome Park in the inaugural Premier League season in August 1992, when Howard Wilkinson's side were the reigning league champions.

Boro fans consider Newcastle and Sunderland to be their main rivals, but do games against Leeds also have an edge? Boro's Stockton-born captain Matthew Bates said last season: "I don't see Leeds as a derby one bit and I don't think any of the other lads do either… it's not really like Newcastle or Sunderland is it?"

However, there was no shortage of passion and commitment when the sides met at Elland Road last August, when 11-man Boro beat nine-man Leeds 1-0. There are also 4,000 visiting fans due to make the trip north on Sunday, hopeful no doubt that Middlesbrough will fail to clinch their first league double over Leeds since 1962-63.

Leeds have taken just eight points from a possible 21 since Simon Grayson's sacking, losing vital momentum. Warnock has tightened up the defence by switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation, but Leeds have failed to score in his first three matches, suggesting the balance is still not quite right.
