Sunderland's last win against Liverpool came back in October 2009 and fans across the country will remember it well. It was the day Liverpool were derailed by the infamous beach ball goal in a 1-0 defeat.

Darren Bent was a Sunderland player then and had a shot after just five minutes which Pepe Reina appeared to have covered, only for the ball to hit a red beach ball, with a Liverpool crest on it, and deflect past the keeper into the net. The goal was allowed to stand and I don't think I've seen a more bizarre one before or since.

“Other than the beach-gate game two and a half years ago, Liverpool have tended to get the better of Sunderland in recent seasons”

Whatever happens in this encounter, it's unlikely to be as explosive as last Sunday's highly charged and bad tempered Tyne-Wear derby in which Sunderland had two players red carded and eight other yellow cards were shown.

The most immediate impact on the field for Sunderland is that Martin O'Neill's team will be without Stephane Sessegnon and Lee Cattermole for this one as they both start suspensions. This comes as they look for their first league win in four matches.

Other than the beach-gate game two and a half years ago, Liverpool have tended to get the better of Sunderland in recent seasons, losing only one of the last 11 meetings - a run which includes eight victories.

The Carling Cup winners haven't been on top form in the league in recent weeks though, winning only two of their last 10 fixtures ahead of this trip to the Stadium of Light and their tally of 30 goals in the league is eight fewer than 17th-placed Blackburn and the same as Wolves, who are in the relegation zone.

How much of it is luck and how much due to wasteful finishing is up for debate of course, but Liverpool's conversion rate is surprisingly the worst in the division at 8.6 per cent. Luis Suarez won't worry about stats like that though; he's got a 100 per cent record against Sunderland, having found the net on both occasions he's played against them, including last season's 2-0 away win.
