Stoke ended a run of four successive Premier League defeats by beating Swansea at the Britannia last weekend and next up for the Potters is another of last May’s promoted teams. By a strange quirk of the Match of the Day commentary rota I was at Carrow Road for the 1-1 draw between these sides back in August. Ritchie De Laet put the Canaries in front but they were unable to hold onto their lead after a red card for defender Leon Barnett (which was later rescinded), and Kenwyne Jones fired a late equaliser for the visitors.

“In my opinion Stoke are a model for all newly-promoted sides to follow”

Had it been suggested to the Norwich fans in late August that they would be in eighth place when the return fixture was played just over six months later, I’m sure you would have got more than a few looks of disbelief. Yet that is the scenario, and Norwich come into this trip in good form on their travels with wins in three of their last four away matches.

This is the seventh time these sides have met at the Britannia and Stoke have never lost to Norwich since moving from the Victoria Ground; indeed they have won the last three meetings on home soil.

Potters boss Tony Pulis has publically stated that he wants to see progress each season. Last May they finished 13th in the Premier League and will begin this match a place higher, still in the FA Cup and aiming for a strong end to the campaign. I recall suggesting in my preview to the August meeting that in my opinion Stoke are a model for all newly-promoted sides to follow – first establish yourself in the Premier League, and then build on that. Look at what Stoke have done since promotion and you’ll see what I mean.

If both strikers feature, it will be interesting to compare Stoke’s Peter Crouch with Norwich’s Grant Holt. Crouch had a short spell on loan at Norwich back in 2003 and has got 10 goals this campaign, while Holt has scored 12. Those goals from the Canaries front-man have played a huge part in Norwich edging ever closer to securing their place in the top division for next term and even stoked up talk of a possible England call-up.

The fact that Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that the better team had lost when his United side played the Canaries last weekend tells you all you need to know about the impact Paul Lambert’s team have made this season.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Norwich have never won in six previous visits to the Britannia Stadium. Their last away win against Stoke was a 2-1 success at the Victoria Ground in January 1997.
Stoke have been victorious in their last three home encounters with the Canaries, including a 5-0 triumph in October 2006.
Norwich won the last top-flight meeting between the clubs played in Stoke: a 3-2 victory in April 1985.

Stoke

Tony Pulis’s men have won just two of their last 10 league matches.
Only Wigan (23) have scored fewer goals than the 26 netted by the Potters. Ten of those (38%) have been headed goals – the highest percentage in the league.
Stoke have exactly the same points total from their opening 26 matches as they did last season, when they went on to finish 13th.
If selected, Jermaine Pennant will be making his 50th league appearance for Stoke, while Kenwyne Jones could make the 50th league appearance of his second stint with the Potters.

Norwich

The Canaries have lost just three of their last 12 Premier League matches.
A win will take Norwich past the 1,000 points mark in top-flight football – they are on currently on 998.
If Norwich concede at the Britannia they will equal the all-time Premier League record of 28 consecutive away matches without a clean sheet – set by Coventry City between February 2000 and May 2001.
Only the top five clubs have scored more league goals this term than Paul Lambert’s side (38).
