Manchester United will be without Phil Jones, Nani and Anderson for Thursday's Europa League last-16 second-leg encounter with Athletic Bilbao.

The versatile Jones is suffering from flu and has not travelled as United look to overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Nani missed Sunday's 2-0 win over West Brom with "bruising", while fellow midfielder Anderson misses out with a hamstring injury.

However, winger Antonio Valencia is back following a hamstring injury.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson will be hoping the Ecuadorian can quickly rediscover the form he was in before injuring himself against Ajax in Amsterdam four weeks ago.

The Red Devils' travelling squad also included Paul Pogba - further strengthening suggestions that the 18-year-old is set to sign a new deal to remain at the club - and fellow midfielder Paul Scholes.

Ferguson confirmed on Wednesday that midfielder Anderson will be out for between four and five weeks.

The United boss also said that with Jones absent and Chris Smalling only considered fit enough for a place on the bench after reopening a head wound in the first leg, Rio Ferdinand will partner Jonny Evans in the centre of defence.

United face a tough task in the San Mames Stadium, trailing from the first leg against a Bilbao side who produced an impressive performance to win at Old Trafford.

However, Ashley Young remains confident that United can achieve the result they need to progress.

"It is unusual that we find ourselves in this position but there is a great team spirit here and everyone is full of confidence," said the winger.

"Our form in general makes us believe we can score wherever we play. Our attacking play has been fantastic of late and we believe we can score the two goals we need.

"Our focus has not changed from the start of the season," said Young. "We want to win every competition we enter and the Europa League is no different.

"Bilbao were an impressive team last week. They were a very attacking team, had a good team shape and at times we found them hard to break down.

"But I am sure if we are on our game 100% we can go there and get the win we need."

It is five years since United overturned a deficit in Europe, when a 7-1 win over Roma saw them through to the Champions League semi-finals after a 2-1 first-leg defeat in Rome.
