Preview

There will be a sense of deja vu for Chelsea when they arrive at The Hawthorns.

Last week the Londoners faced a Bolton side they had not lost to in 16 league games – a run which included 13 wins. On Saturday they face a West Brom team with an even worse record against the men from Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have beaten the Baggies in 15 consecutive top-flight matches.

“Keith Andrews was rejected by Blackburn but is becoming a big influence in the Black Country”

At a time when Andre Villas-Boas is under constant scrutiny, he could not have wished for two more convenient opponents.

His team will be hoping to pick up where they left off against Bolton, when their second-half display was more like the Chelsea we all know. But they must be wary of a West Brom side that has run into a rich vein of form in the last two matches. Big wins against Wolves and Sunderland have seen Albion pull clear of the cluster of clubs battling relegation.

Roy Hodgson believes his side are as near as they can be to securing safety at this stage of the season.

With five goals in their last two games, Peter Odemwingie has rightly earned the plaudits. Suddenly he looks back to his best. But it’s another player who I think has made a big difference for the Baggies. January signing Keith Andrews was also on target in those matches and set up his club colleague Simon Cox for the Republic of Ireland’s goal against the Czech Republic in midweek. He was rejected by Blackburn but is becoming a big influence in the Black Country.

Chelsea know they cannot afford to slip up as they continue their pursuit of fourth place. By the time they face West Brom, Arsenal will already have played Liverpool, leaving Villas-Boas and his players knowing what they must do to get back into the Champions League spots. That will guarantee Chelsea are fired up for this encounter.
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Chelsea have won all 11 Premier League encounters between the two sides.
West Brom have not beaten Chelsea in their last 17 league games (D1, L16) – their last win was a 1-0 victory at The Hawthorns in March 1979.
Chelsea have scored 31 Premier League goals against West Brom, more than any other club against the Baggies.

West Brom

West Brom’s victory against Sunderland saw them register consecutive top-flight victories with a margin of at least four goals for the first time in 76 years (since an 8-1 win against Blackburn and 6-1 victory over Liverpool in January-February 1936).
The Baggies have won their last two Premier League games – they have not registered three consecutive Premier League victories since August-September 2002 when they secured a trio of 1-0 wins against Fulham, West Ham and Southampton.
Victory for West Brom would be their 700th home win in top-flight football.
Peter Odemwingie has scored more goals (5) in his last two Premier League games than he had in his previous 20 (4). He is now one away from becoming the first West Brom player to score 25 Premier League goals.
Jerome Thomas is looking to make his 200th league appearance.

Chelsea

Chelsea have 46 points from 26 Premier League games – one more than they had at the same stage last season under Carlo Ancelotti.
They have won just three of their last 11 Premier League games.
Only Manchester United have conceded fewer away goals (11) in the Premier League than Chelsea (12).
Didier Drogba is one short of 100 Premier League goals, while a goal for Frank Lampard would be his 150th in the Premier League – Lampard already has 150 league goals, having scored once for Swansea in the Football League during a loan spell.
Salomon Kalou could make his 150th Premier League appearance, while Ramires awaits his 50th.
