When I last spoke to Roberto Martinez he couldn't stop smiling. We were in the TV interview room at the Reebok Stadium and his Wigan side had just deservedly beaten fellow strugglers Bolton 2-1. An escape route from the relegation zone could be seen. Sadly for him, that victory hasn't proved a springboard towards survival.

Instead, the Latics have failed to make the most of two successive home games: they've only a solitary point to show for their efforts against Villa and Swansea. Last week's defeat to the Welsh club even prompted a rare critical blast from chairman Dave Whelan, although his wrath was quickly soothed after a lengthy meeting with his manager on Monday.

His support is a huge positive in the struggle ahead, as is the fact that Wigan are still within touching distance of safety. Also, they've experienced all this before - last season's great escape could prove invaluable.

However, the class of 2012 lack the brilliance of Charles N'Zogbia, while Hugo Rodallega is a pale shadow of his former self. The team doesn't score enough goals and the defence remains shaky. Quite simply, one win 12 games is relegation form. With away trips to Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal on the calendar next, Wigan need to grab that safety rope sooner rather than later.

I just fear that they'll be meeting a wounded animal at Carrow Road. By their high standards Norwich have wobbled in recent weeks, and if you include their surprise FA Cup exit to Leicester that's three defeats in a row for Paul Lambert's men - their worst run of the season. But it's only a fortnight ago that I saw them dominate champions Manchester United for huge periods before losing to that Ryan Giggs goal in stoppage time.

Grant Holt, Anthony Pilkington and Kyle Naughton never fail to impress me and I believe it will be the Canaries that will rediscover that winning feeling by the final whistle. It might be hard for Roberto to raise a smile in that TV interview room this time.
