Birmingham City have eight players unavailable for Tuesday's FA Cup fifth round replay against Chelsea.

Stephen Carr (knee), Steve Caldwell (ribs), David Murphy (hip) and Keith Fahey (groin) are all injured, while Curtis Davies (illness) is a doubt.

Peter Ramage and Erik Huseklepp are cup-tied and Caleb Folan is ineligible.

Roberto di Matteo takes charge of Chelsea for the first time since he was put in temporary charge following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Birmingham boss Chris Hughton believes that Villas-Boas should have been given more time at Stamford Bridge.

In the wake of the 36-year-old Portuguese being sacked after eight months in charge, Hughton said: "I think it is no time for a manager.

"It's a club very much going through a transitional period and I felt he needed time to finish the job he wanted to complete.

"Is it embarrassing for Chelsea? It's their choice on what percentage of managers they want to go through.

"I think these days we can be critical of foreign managers that don't speak the language so well.

"But he is a real student of the game, he speaks English very well and has got his coaching qualifications on these shores."
MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• This is the 95th meeting of these clubs. Chelsea have won 63 of the previous 96, Birmingham 25, with 26 drawn.

• Chelsea have lost only one of the last 20 league and cup matches against Birmingham, winning 13.

• But in the FA Cup, Birmingham have had the better of the exchanges, progressing in five of their eight previous ties. They triumphed 3-0 in a quarter-final replay on their way to the final in 1931, while Chelsea's 3-0 home victory in January 1970 was the start of the route to their first FA Cup crown.

• The winners of this replay will be home to Leicester in the quarter-finals on Sunday, 18 March (19:45 kick off).

Birmingham City

• Chris Hughton's side, who've lost one of 17 league and cup games, embark on a second attempt to qualify for the last eight of the FA Cup for the third year running. Both clubs conceded their first goal in this season's competition in the original tie at Stamford Bridge on 18 February.

• Last season's Carling Cup winners have never lifted the FA Cup, but were runners-up in 1931 and 1956.

• Birmingham are aiming to knock out a second Premier League club in this run, having already disposed of Wolves. They have lost only one of their last five home FA Cup matches.

Chelsea

• Robert di Matteo takes charge of a Chelsea side, who've won one of their last seven in all competitions, and to rely on a second half header from Daniel Sturridge to avoid the embarrassment of FA Cup defeat to Championship Birmingham. David Murphy had put the visitors ahead.

• Sturridge has scored eight goals in nine FA Cup appearances in his career, seven of which have come in his six starts for Chelsea.

• The six-times winners, who have lifted the cup in three of the last six seasons, have lost only two of the last 30 FA Cup matches - one of those being on penalties. They have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 FA Cup outings on the road, including neutral grounds, since losing at Barnsley in the 2008 quarter-finals.
