As Manchester United take to the field at Old Trafford, so Manchester City will be emerging from the tunnel at Swansea - for once the fixtures of the two title rivals are synchronised. It's the kind of occasion which has fans keeping one ear glued to the radio hoping for news of the other's demise.

“The Baggies now have real hopes of finishing higher than last season's 11th, which was their best since 1983”

Given that they are at home, United's looks the easier task on paper. But they will do well to be wary of West Brom.

Albion have hit form in a big way and in the last three matches have provided the knock-out punches to Mick McCarthy's career at Wolves and AVB's at Chelsea, either side of a 4-0 demolition of Sunderland. The Baggies now have real hopes of finishing higher than last season's 11th, which was their best since 1983.

Roy Hodgson deserves great credit for the way they have built on last season's momentum and recovered from a sticky start to this campaign - they won just one of their first seven games and were bottom in mid-September.

Hodgson's contract runs out in the summer and captain Chris Brunt has been urging the club to put that right. After all, if Harry Redknapp's succession to England from Spurs hits the rocks, Hodgson seems to be the obvious next in line. Without a new contract being agreed, Hodgson - unlike Redknapp - would not cost a fortune to extract from his club commitments and, unlike Redknapp, he has a proven international record.

Ferguson and Hodgson have an unbelievable 74 years managerial experience between them and are firm friends; how I would love to be a fly on the wall as they share a glass of something after what should be an excellent game to watch, especially with United smarting from their shock Europa League loss to Bilbao on Thursday.
