In the tit-for-tat race for the title, Manchester City may well have identified this weekend as a significant one for them. In the tit-for-tat race for the title, Manchester City may well have identified this weekend as a significant one for them.
Manchester United play at Tottenham on Sunday, City are at home to Bolton on Saturday. Now I don't want to upset any Bolton fans, but by the time United run out at White Hart Lane they will surely be five points behind their rivals.
The fact that Spurs were on the wrong end of an Emirates drubbing last weekend will surely make life even harder for United. This Tottenham side are hard enough to beat without them being motivated by a need to right those wrongs against Arsenal. United may need to call upon every drop of their famous survival instinct, just as they did at Norwich last Sunday.
It is a test of character for Spurs too. They have taken only eight points from the last 18 available in a tough run of fixtures, and have been a little fortunate that those below them have failed to significantly narrow the gap to third place.
They also have a long history of keeping United supplied with points a plenty. The Londoners have managed a paltry six draws from the last 25 meetings with United since their last win in 2001.
Harry Redknapp turned 65 on Friday. Far from retiring, he looks destined to embark on his biggest job yet. If he does become the next England manager he will be the oldest man ever to take the job. He will not want to bow out without leading Spurs back into the Champions League, ideally finishing as London's top club for the first time since 1995; and who knows - maybe with a win over United under their belts too? City will certainly hope so.
MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
Tottenham have failed to win any of their last 25 meetings with Manchester United in all competitions (W19, D6), including 21 Premier League matches.
Spurs' last victory over the Red Devils was a 3-1 success in May 2001 at White Hart Lane. United veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes both started that match, the latter scoring.
Harry Redknapp's men have failed to score in four of their last five league and cup games against the Red Devils.
The 14 games between the current top five in the Premier League have produced 68 goals - an average of almost 4.9 per match. In the 20 encounters between the same top five last season 42 goals were scored at just 2.10 per game.
Tottenham
Spurs have won two of their last six top-flight matches (W2, D2, L2).
They are unbeaten in 12 league games at White Hart Lane (W10, D2) since their 5-1 defeat by Manchester City on 28 August.
Defeat to Arsenal was the third time this season Spurs have lost a Premier League game by at least a three-goal margin.
Manchester United
The Red Devils have already claimed 30 points away from home - five more than their total during the 2010-11 campaign. They are chasing their 10th away victory - twice as many as they managed last season.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have claimed 16 points from a possible 18 since losing back-to-back games at the turn of the year.
They have kept three clean sheets in their last 12 league and cup games.
Rio Ferdinand is set to make his 450th league appearance in English football.
Wayne Rooney has scored six goals in his last seven league games against Spurs
